Glow 2014

The Glow is an annual festival in Eindhoven where artists and designers from home and abroad present light art and design applications by using new media technologies, such as computers, sensors, animations, and also the well-known projection techniques [wikipedia]. Actually, I think this event fits nicely in Eindhoven because Philips is from here and one of the strategic directions for this company was always light.

This year there were more than 50 diffferent exhibitions and they were divided in two areas around the city - in city center and in industrial area - Strijp.

The good thing about Glow is that this festival is for free and everyone can join it during a week. I went for Strijp section, for 18 exhibitions. More than half of them were from Dutch Universities but there were also projects from US, Japan, France. And I think Glow will become more and more international next years. This festival is still young (from 2006) and it needs some time to get known.

So, let me briefly go through what I have seen.

The exhibition took place in an old industrial area that was reinnovated and is being used now for exhibitions. To go through all of them you can follow arrows on the route.

Each exhibition has own number:

Some exhibitions are interactive. For example, make your own movie in old cinema:

I was suprised to find project from MIT, Local warming:

When you walk infrared lamps react and shine on you:

Interactive crosswalk:

One of my favourite findings, 3D projections, Nonotak:

Really nice project that looks and works impressive:

And another cool project from Philips, Aura. The sensor reacts on your hands movements:

Rounded object with lamps inside reacts by making sounds and changing light color:

Works like a charm:

Everyone could come in front of the camera that projects filtered video to the huge billboard:

Amazing skatepark with changing projections:s

Lamps shine from range of angles on different sides of a sculpture that makes an interesting effect:

Small thing that turns on only if you put it on the ground:

Some projections of flowing chemicals between two pieces of glasses on the wall:

One more interesting finding. Project from Japan, lighting column.

To see an effect you have to move your head from left to right or another way around. I tried to make it with camera, looks quite similar:

That was Glow 2014 in Strijp-S. In my opinion, really nice event. I suggest to visit and look forward for the next year.
